... the song quoted, "Stanley Matthews, the greatest of them all", was written by me for a Keele university charity record. It was inspired by seeing Stanley Matthews score the goal, against Luton Town, which clinched promotion for Stoke City at the end of the 1962-3 season. The song was performed by our folk song group, The Keele Row. Stanley Matthews was the greatest but he was also the returning local hero, who inspired a struggling second division team and their supporters. It was a fairy tale that none of us, who were lucky enough to be there, will ever forget ...
